Overview

Employee will perform a variety of complex and technical office and field duties related to design of overhead and underground electric and gas facilities necessary to supply or maintain required supply of energy service within our distribution area.

Responsibilities

GENERAL DUTIES

The normal duties may include but are not limited to:

  • Employee will be knowledgeable of and follow all safety rules, procedures and practices.

  • Employee, acting in conjunction with supervision, or individually as directed by supervision, will assist with the training of other employees in the correct operating procedures necessary to fully satisfy the classification duties of Engineering Design Technician Trainee within the subject line of progression. This shall include other duties with which the employee is familiar.

  • Employee will, when directed by supervision, report to assigned locations for the purpose of receiving training and will actively participate in training activities.

  • Employee will exhibit an adequate competency level pertaining to activities delineated in the Duties and Qualifications sections of this job classification. The employee will demonstrate such competency via performance of job duties and training and testing programs administered at intervals prescribed by the Company to assure correct classification of employees.

  • Employee will, during the normal performance of his duties, watch for and promptly report to supervision any damaged or defective equipment or conditions which may cause damage or injury.

  • Employee will perform such other duties that are within his/her capabilities as directed by supervision that are necessary to Company operation or are needed for training for higher classifications.

  • Employee will keep all equipment, tools, materials and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.

  • Employee will report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.

  • Employee will perform work in a responsible and cooperative manner to facilitate a positive working environment within and outside the Company.

  • Employee will compile information and generate reports, forms and documents as required.

  • Employee will represent the Company to the community with attention to the highest standard of conduct, appearance and attitude.

SPECIFIC DUTIES

Duties, which may include, but are not limited to:

  • Employee will perform all the duties of the Engineer Design Tech B and Trainee.

  • Employee will lead other employees in all phases of field and office work.

  • Employee will coordinate work assignments with other departments of the Company and with outside agencies, utilities and contractors. Work will include (but not limited to) interpreting the engineering drawings from outside agencies and utilities for conflicts with existing and proposed gas & electric facilities. Work will also include (but not limited to): the coordination of design of new company facilities in concert with outside agencies, utilities and contractors.

  • Employee will maintain and utilize needed proficiency to layout and design detailed engineering work necessary to provide construction personnel with all necessary information to install, modify and/or maintain gas and electric facilities within or being added to the Company's distribution systems. Engineering work includes calculation of proper pipe/cable size, pressures, voltages, etc. Additional responsibility will include making sure easements and permits are secured.

  • Employee will layout, design and prepare estimates and drawings, utilizing Computer Aided Drafting software, tools and other computer applications. This will include construction plans, permits and easement drawings necessary for new, replacements or alterations of gas & electric facilities. Additional responsibility will include, upon completion of work, making permanent records or revising existing records.

  • Employee will assist or perform any necessary preliminary office work pertinent to a particular job such as looking up old jobs and existing facilities in the area.

  • Employee will assist or perform fieldwork necessary to insure facilities are installed in the proper location and that all easements and rights of way have been obtained. Fieldwork includes use of any necessary survey equipment such as the level, stadia rod and transit for establishing line and grade and staking facilities for construction.

  • Employee will locate or assist with locating existing gas and electric facilities in the field, including electronic locating, probing. The employee will plot them on the plans of various construction projects to determine: current availability and capacity of service, what will be needed to extend or enhance existing service, what re-locations and adjustments of facilities may be needed.

  • Employee will develop a proficient knowledge of the procedures and policies used in making facility re-locations for proposed construction of streets, highways, sewers, drainage structures and the facilities of other utilities

  • Employee will locate and use various courthouse records such as deeds, subdivision plats, tax books, etc.

  • Employee will prepare or assist with detailed cost estimates, bills of material for assigned projects and in preparation of Authorization of Capital Expenditures.

  • Employee will report job progress, problems and other pertinent information relative to jobs and work projects to appropriate personnel.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR ENTRY INTO:

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Employee must meet all general qualifications of employment.

  • Employee must be able to speak, understand, read and write English, and be able to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Employee must have a two-year degree in drafting or equivalent degree.

  • Employee must be able to learn to use the tools and equipment required in the work.

  • Employee must be thoroughly familiar with the Company Safety Rules and willingly see that they are enforced.

  • Employee must have a valid state driver's license and pass the Transportation Department's driver's test for operating Company vehicles, including those with manual transmissions.

  • Employee must be willing to work inside and outside under varying weather conditions.

  • Employee must be willing to report as directed to any facility for any shift where needed.

  • Employee must be in good health and be able to perform the physical requirements of the job.

  • Employee must possess the willingness and ability to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to advance to higher qualifications

  • Employee must be willing and able to communicate through both verbal and written reports.

  • Employee must be able to learn to make and read simple drawings and sketches.

  • Employee must have demonstrated ability to carry through work assignments and conduct himself/herself in a manner that encourages cooperation and satisfactory work from others assigned to work with him/her.

  • Employee must have demonstrated proficiency in the ability to perform the duties associated with the lower classification(s) within the line of progression.

  • Employee must be able to lead, direct, and train other employees assigned to work with him/her to obtain satisfactory work results.

SPECIFIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Employee must have at least twelve (12) months experience as an Engineering Technician Trainee or the equivalent and successfully completed all training and testing programs required in that classification.

  • Employee must have proficient technical knowledge of gas and electric symbols/terms, distribution systems, materials, construction procedures and related skills such as mathematics to be able to handle difficult design assignments and to examine other employees work.

  • Employee must have proficient knowledge of the gas and electric system in general, the streets, roads, highways, general area served and the Company’s extension and service policies.

  • Employee must have proficient knowledge of surveying concepts and the use of surveying equipment such as a transit, level and stadia rod.

  • Employee must be competent in computer applications, demonstrate ability to master new applications, and proficient with Computer Aided Drafting software and tools
